Ostara or Eostre - Spring Equinox, Terraced Garden
We had four sunny and warm days just before Ostara or Eostre, the Spring Equinox, when the powers of light and dark are in perfect balance. We took advantage of the weather to complete building a terraced garden on top of the cardboard. A fellow gardener with 30 years experience on Malcolm Island had cautioned against erosion and the washing away of nutrients with heavy rains. Hence, each bed follows the contours of the land and the soil is held back by rocks collected from the field. The rocks will also collect the heat from the sun. Behind the garden, there is a huge rock retaining wall built by the previous owner to create a level driveway that will also store heat. The next step is to fence the garden from deer, for which we have gathered old fish nets.
Below is our heart at the gate, as suggested by fellow Sointulans to give the children activities and inspiration during this time of virus quarantine.
Finally, here is a view of the snow-capped peaks of Vancouver Island from the garden following the advice of a member of the neighbouring Namgis First Nation who said "Look to the horizon" during these turbulent times.
