Fall Equinox - Mabon or Dožínky, the middle harvest festival

The term Mabon was coined by a neo-pagan in the 1970's as a reference to Mabon ap Modron, a character from Welsh mythology.  However, the Slavic harvest festival Dožínky continues to this day around the time of the Fall Equinox.

As we have time following the harvesting, we continue to expand the veggie garden by laying down cardboard.  The kind owners of the Sointula Oceanfront Hotel are now providing us with an endless supply of cardboard and compost!

The zucchini, basil and tomatoes were crawling around all over our temporary plastic hoop house since there wasn't enough room to hang them.  We will eventually convert our "Shelter Logic" storage tent sheds to greenhouses where there will be lots of room.

For the past few weeks we have been enjoying a steady supply of fresh veggies!  With the expanded garden, next year we hope to have more to freeze, dry, and can, just like we did at our old place.

We are curing the onions in the old solar dryer (there's not much other use for it in our new wetter climate on the North Island).

Here are the selected big garlic cloves that are planted for next year's crop.

And we even had enough extra cabbages to make some sauerkraut.
