Imbolc/Frozen Groundhog Day - Celebrating Two Years of the LuckyFarm 77 Blog!
It was two years ago that we made our first post for the Lucky Farm 77 blog on a snowy Imbolc showing our first small patch of garlic. We've come a long way since then baby, but baby it's cold outside today, like this New Year's dawn on our expanding magic garden!
It just kept snowing after Solstice, covering the garden with almost a foot of snow.
We became worried about the overwintering birds so we made frozen wreaths of berries and grains, including salal, cranberries, homemade raisins, barley, and quinoa that we hung up in a tree. But we think that we mainly fed the crows and ravens.
One day we saw a Giant Horned Owl sitting in a tree in the forest. We didn't have time to take a photo, so Linda made this little painting of us looking at the owl with binoculars.
Lo and behold, deep in the snow we were able to harvest some overwintering small carrots. The beets have all been harvested but we still continue to pick kale and parsely.
As we ski off down the forest trail, here's hoping that Imbolc really is the beginning of Spring. Wikipedia reports that Imbolc/St. Brigid's day will be declared a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland starting in 2023, where Spring starts earlier and they really must be tuned into their Keltic roots.
